If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, one of the most important things to check before making a decision for 2027 is simple:

Will your doctors still be in-network next year?

A plan may look great based on the premium, copays, dental benefits, or other extras. But if your primary care doctor, specialists, hospital, or medical group is no longer in the network, that could make a big difference in whether the plan works for you. Medicare Advantage provider networks can change, which is why it is worth checking your doctors each year rather than assuming everything will stay the same.

Why Medicare Advantage Provider Networks Matter

Many Medicare Advantage plans use a network of doctors, hospitals, specialists, and other healthcare providers. Depending on the type of plan you have, using a provider outside that network could mean:

  • You pay more for your care

  • Certain services may not be covered out of network

  • You may need to choose a different doctor

  • You may need a referral to see certain specialists

  • Your preferred hospital or medical group may not participate

This is especially important with HMO plans, where non-emergency care generally needs to come from providers in the plan's network. PPO plans may offer more flexibility to see out-of-network providers, but your costs can be higher.

Don't Assume Your Doctor Is Still In-Network for 2027

Even if your doctor accepted your Medicare Advantage plan throughout 2026, that does not automatically mean the doctor will participate in the same plan in 2027. Provider contracts and networks can change.

CMS requires Medicare Advantage organizations to maintain provider directories and update information when they learn of changes. For 2027, CMS is also implementing provider-directory information through Medicare Plan Finder to make network information easier for consumers to review. That makes your doctor list an important part of your annual Medicare review.

How to Check Whether Your Doctor Is In-Network for 2027

Before enrolling in or staying with a Medicare Advantage plan, I recommend checking each important provider individually.

1. Make a list of the doctors you want to keep

Include more than your primary care doctor. Think about:

  • Primary care physician

  • Cardiologist

  • Oncologist

  • Endocrinologist

  • Orthopedic doctor

  • Dermatologist

  • Mental health providers

  • Physical therapists

  • Other specialists you regularly see

Also include the hospitals and medical facilities you prefer.

2. Check the Medicare Advantage plan's provider directory

Medicare Advantage plans provide searchable directories showing participating providers. When searching, make sure you are looking at the 2027 plan, not simply the current 2026 network. CMS guidance states that provider directories used during the Annual Enrollment Period for an upcoming year should fairly represent the network for that upcoming plan year.

3. Verify the exact doctor and location

This is an easy detail to overlook. A doctor may practice at several locations, and network participation can sometimes depend on the location, medical group, or other contracting details. Confirm:

  • Doctor's full name

  • Practice name

  • Office location

  • Plan name

  • Specific Medicare Advantage plan

Don't rely only on hearing that a doctor's office "takes UnitedHealthcare," "takes Humana," or accepts another insurance company. An insurance carrier may offer several different Medicare Advantage plans with different networks.

4. Check your preferred hospital too

Your doctor isn't the only provider that matters. Ask yourself:

If I needed surgery or a hospital stay next year, where would I want to go?

Then make sure that hospital participates with the plan you are considering. The same applies to:

  • Outpatient surgery centers

  • Rehabilitation facilities

  • Skilled nursing facilities

  • Imaging centers

  • Major health systems

What About Your Annual Notice of Change?

If you already have a Medicare Advantage plan, you should receive an Annual Notice of Change, commonly called an ANOC, each fall.

The ANOC explains changes to your plan's coverage, costs, and other plan information that will take effect in January. Medicare recommends reviewing these changes to decide whether the plan will continue to meet your needs for the following year.

Your ANOC is important, but it shouldn't be the only thing you review. I also recommend checking:

  • Doctors and hospitals

  • Prescription drugs

  • Premiums

  • Medical copays

  • Maximum out-of-pocket costs

  • Dental and vision benefits

  • Prescription drug costs

  • Other benefits you regularly use

What If Your Doctor Isn't In-Network?

Finding out that a doctor isn't participating with your Medicare Advantage plan doesn't automatically mean you need to change plans. It means you have a decision to make. You may need to compare:

  • Whether another Medicare Advantage plan includes the doctor

  • Whether your current plan has another provider you would be comfortable seeing

  • The costs and benefits of alternative plans

  • Whether changing plans would affect your prescriptions or other providers

The goal isn't simply to find the plan with the most benefits. The goal is to find coverage that fits the way you actually receive healthcare.

When Can You Change Medicare Advantage Plans?

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. During this period, Medicare beneficiaries can make certain changes to their Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage for the following year. That makes October a good time to review your doctors, prescriptions, and plan changes before making a decision.
