Mid-Year Medicare Checkup: What to Review Before Fall

It may only be July, but Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period—October 15 through December 7—will be here before we know it.

Before the commercials take over, the mail starts stacking up, and every envelope looks urgent, this is a good time to slow down and see how your current Medicare coverage is actually working.

You do not need to wait until fall to notice a problem.

A mid-year Medicare review gives you a chance to look at what has changed, what has worked well, and what may need a closer look before the busy enrollment season begins.

Think of it like checking your car before a long trip. You are not expecting something to be wrong. You are making sure everything is working the way it should.

Are Your Prescriptions Still Working With Your Plan?

Take a look at the medications you are currently taking.

Have you started any new prescriptions? Has your dosage changed? Have you noticed higher copays or problems getting a medication filled?

Your plan’s drug list and pharmacy pricing can affect what you pay. Writing down any prescription concerns now makes it easier to review your options when the new plan information becomes available.

Are You Able to See the Doctors You Want?

Doctors, specialists, hospitals, and insurance companies can make changes throughout the year.

Have you had trouble scheduling an appointment? Were you told a provider was no longer in your network? Is there a new specialist you need to see?

If there is a doctor or hospital you want to continue using, make a note of it. Your providers should always be checked carefully before making any future plan decisions.

How Has Your Coverage Worked When You Needed Care?

Think back over the first half of the year.

Have you visited the emergency room, had outpatient surgery, stayed in the hospital, or received a bill you were not expecting?

A $0 monthly premium does not mean every service costs $0. A mid-year review helps identify where your current coverage may leave you responsible for larger copays when you need care.

This is also a good time to look at whether additional protection, such as hospital indemnity coverage, may make sense for your situation.

Has Anything Changed With Your Health or Your Life?

A Medicare plan that worked well in January may not fit the same way after a major change.

Changes worth reviewing may include:

  • A new health diagnosis

  • New prescriptions or treatments

  • A recent or upcoming move

  • Changes to Medicaid or Extra Help

  • New doctors or specialists

  • More frequent medical care

  • Changes to VA, TRICARE, employer, or retiree coverage

  • New concerns about hospital or out-of-pocket costs

Some changes may also create an opportunity to review your coverage before the Annual Enrollment Period.

Are You Using Your Extra Benefits?

Many Medicare Advantage plans include benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, over-the-counter allowances, fitness programs, transportation, or other services.

Have you used them?

Sometimes people have useful benefits available but are not sure how to access them. If you have a benefit card sitting in a drawer or an app you have never opened, include that on your review. I can help you figure out what is available and how to use it.

Are You Receiving Medicare Mail You Do Not Understand?

As fall approaches, you may receive the Medicare & You handbook, your plan’s Annual Notice of Change, and a growing pile of advertisements.

Some of that information is important. Some of it is marketing designed to look official.

You do not have to sort through it alone. Send me a picture, call me, or bring it with you when we review your coverage. I will help you determine what matters and what can be ignored.

Why Complete a Mid-Year Medicare Review Now?

Waiting until October can make everything feel rushed.

Completing a review now gives us time to identify concerns before the fall Medicare noise begins. It also gives you a place to write down changes while they are still fresh in your mind.

And if everything is working well? That is a great outcome.

My goal is not to change your plan for the sake of making a change. My goal is to make sure your coverage continues to match your doctors, prescriptions, health needs, and budget.
